Kaum eine Stadt auf der Welt besitzt so eine Strahlkraft wie New York City. Allein beim bloßen Hören des Namens der Stadt fallen einem dutzende Bilder und Assoziationen ein – ganz gleich, ob er oder sie schon einmal dort war: Das Empire State Building, der Central Park, der Times Square samt Broadway, die Wall Street, die Fifth Avenue, die Upper East Side, Chinatown, Little Italy…die Liste ließe sich nahezu endlos fortführen und zeugt sogleich von der unfassbaren Vielfalt der Metropole. Doch der Reihe nach.
Der bekannteste und schillerndste Stadtteil New Yorks ist zweifelsohne Manhattan Island! Häufig sieht die Realität anders aus, als auf den Urlaubsbildern von Freunden und Verwandten oder auf den Bildern, wie man sie aus all den Fernsehserien und Spielfilmen kennt. Doch Manhattan ist genauso pulsierend, groß und imposant wie man es sich vorstellt.
No place on earth possesses an aura like New York City. Just hearing the city’s name strikes people with a dozen pictures and associations – whether they’ve ever been there or not. The Empire State Building, the Central Park, the Times Square, the Broadway, the Wall Street, the Fifth Avenue, the Upper East Side, Chinatown, Little Italy…the list goes on and on and shows the incredible diversity of the American metropolis.
New York has five boroughs but best-known is the vibrant and fabulous borough of Manhattan Island. Often places look different in reality than they do in the vacation photos from family and friends or in TV shows and films. But Manhattan, is just as pulsating, big and impressive as one imagines.
Concrete Jungle Where Dreams Are Made of
Fangen wir in Lower Manhattan, auch Downtown genannt, an. Der südliche Teil von Manhattan Island wird eingegrenzt vom Hudson River im Westen und dem East River im Osten. Historisch gesehen liegt hier sogar der Grundstein der kompletten Stadt. So erwarben im Jahr 1621 Niederländische Siedler die Insel „Man-a-hatt-a“ von einigen Indianern, um dort eine Siedlung errichten zu können. Der gezahlte Preis: Schmuck im Wert von rund 24 $. Auch heute ist Lower Manhattan noch ein Ort der Geschäfte. Hier standen die Zwillingstürme des World Trade Centers und in der Wall Street befindet sich neben dem Sitz zahlreicher Kreditinstitute auch heute noch die weltgrößte Wertpapierbörse, die New York Stock Exchange. Dem entsprechend geschäftig geht es auf den Straßen zu. Im sogenannten Financial District prägen Männer in Anzügen und Frauen in Kostümen das Straßenbild. Das Smartphone in der einen, den Coffee-to-go in der anderen Hand, geht es im Eilschritt von einem Termin zum Nächsten. Wolkenkratzer machen das Stadtbild aus. Schnell fühlt man sich erinnert an die Welt von Harvey Spector und Mike Ross aus der US-Serie „Suits“.
Let’s start in Lower Manhattan, also known as Downtown. The southern tip of Manhattan Island is bound by the Hudson River to the west and the East River to the east. Historically, here lies the founding stone of the entire city. In the year 1621 settlers from the Netherlands brought the island “Man-a-hatt-a” from a Native American tribe. The price they paid, cheap jewelry worth $24. Even today, Lower Manhattan is a place where deals are being made. Here stood the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and located in the Wall Street, among banks from all over the world, you’ll find the world’s biggest stock market, the New York Stock Exchange. The fast-paced non-stop feel of the neighborhood gives the streets radiate a buzzing vibe, in the Financial District the dress code screams business and you will see a lot of guys and women wearing suits. With a coffee to go in their one hand and a smartphone in the other, they head from one meeting to another on the double while skyscrapers fill the cityscape. Quickly, one feels reminded of the world of Harvey Spector and Mike Ross from the TV Show “Suits”.

Von Beginn an war New York ein Ort der Vielfalt. In seiner Frühzeit war die Stadt so der Ankunftsort für viele Einwanderer von überall aus der Welt. Die Neue Welt und ganz besonders New York City wurde so zu einem bildlichen Schmelztiegel: Sich fremde Leute mit den verschiedensten Hintergründen kamen zusammen, um Teil einer homogeneren und vereinten Gesellschaft zu werden.
Right from its beginning, New York has been a place of diversity. Throughout the city’s history, New York has been a major port of entry for immigrants from all over the world into the United States. The New World and especially New York City turned into a metaphorical melting pot by bringing together different people from different backgrounds to create a more homogeneous and united society.
Im Südwesten von Lower Manhattan findet man den Battery Park, eine etwa zehn Hektar große Grünanlage. Der Park eignet sich nicht bloß hervorragend zum Joggen und Entspannen, sondern bietet auch einen einmaligen Blick auf ein – wenn nicht das Wahrzeichen von New York: Die Freiheitsstatue!
Der Name des Parks geht derweil wieder auf die ersten Siedler aus den Niederlanden zurück. Sie errichteten hier eine Geschützbatterie zur Verteidigung ihrer Siedlung. Heute wird der Park jedoch nicht bloß als Rückzugsort, sondern auch als Ausflugsort geschätzt. Vom am Battery Park gelegenen Hafen legen nämlich unter anderem auch die Fähren zur Freiheitsstatue ab.
In the southwest of Lower Manhattan you will find Battery Park, a ten acre large urban green space. It is not just a perfect place to relax or to go for a quick run but offers a unique view of one of, if not the, landmarks of New York City: The Statue of Liberty! Meanwhile, the parks name goes back to the Dutch settlers again. Back in the days, this is where they installed an artillery battery in defense of their colony. Today, the park is not just popular as a retreat haven but also as a ferry terminal. Battery Park functions as a port of departure for the ferries to the Statue of Liberty among others.
On Top of the World
Um sich in New York einen Überblick zu verschaffen, sei jedem empfohlen zumindest einmal auf eine der vielen Aussichtsplattformen hoch über der Stadt zu steigen. Das One World Trade Center ist mit über 541 Metern Höhe eines der höchsten Gebäude der Welt. Im 100-102 Stock befindet sich eine 360-Grad-Aussichtsplattform, das One World Observatory. Auch wenn man von dort vielleicht nicht über die ganze Welt blicken kann, so kann man bei guten Wetterverhältnissen rund 80 km weit sehen und hat damit eine einmalige Aussicht weit über die Grenzen Manhattans hinweg. Der Besuch ist zwar nicht kostenlos, allerdings gestaltet sich allein die Fahrstuhlfahrt schon spektakulär. Der Aufzug bringt euch mit rund 37 km/h nach oben. Wem das nun Angst machen sollte, dem sei gesagt, dass er bestens abgelenkt wird. Der Fahrstuhl ist von innen komplett mit Bildschirmen ausgekleidet und ermöglicht einen beeindruckenden, virtuellen Ausblick aus einem „gläsernen Fahrstuhl“ heraus. In einem Zeitraffer-Video sieht man, wie Manhattan über die Jahrhunderte „aus dem Boden“ und in die Höhe wächst. Ehe man sich versieht, ist man auch schon oben und kann die atemberaubende Aussicht genießen!
To get a real view of New York it is almost mandatory to climb up to one of the city’s observation decks. One World Trade Center has a height of 1,776 feet (541 m) and is one the tallest buildings in the Western Hemisphere. Located on floors 100-102 the tower has a tree-story observation deck called the “One World Observatory”. You might not be able to see the whole world from here but under good weather conditions you have a clear sight for around 50 miles (80 km). There is an admission charge but it is definitely worth the money. Even the elevator ride up to the platform is spectacular, it is believed to be the fastest elevator ride in North America! Each car travels at 23 mph (37 km/h), and will move from the ground to the 102nd floor in just 60 seconds, but no worries you will enjoy the ride. The cars are completely lined with monitors suggesting a virtual view out of a perceived glassy elevator. While riding up, the monitors show a quick time lapse of the city being built from the ground up. In the blink of an eye you are up at the observatory and can enjoy the breathtaking view.
These Streets Will Make You Feel Brand New
Nirgends ist man dem Puls der Stadt näher als in Midtown Manhattan. Mit all seinen ansässigen Konzernen und Firmen ist Midtown eines der größten Geschäftszentren der USA. In den unzähligen Boutiquen, Shops aber auch auf den Straßen entstehen Trends, die anschließend um den Globus gehen. Der Stadtteil ist ebenso nobel wie elegant und zieht die High Society aus der ganzen Welt an. Wer shoppen möchte wie Carrie Bradshaw aus „Sex and the City“, ist in Midtown genau richtig!
The best place to feel the city’s vibe is Midtown Manhattan! It is one of the largest central business districts in the world and is as fancy as it is fashionable. The borough is literally a magnet for high society from all over the world. Also, with its countless boutiques and shops the streets of Midtown are the birthplace for tomorrow’s trends. If you want to shop like Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City”, Midtown is the place to be!
Auch architektonisch hat Midtown einiges zu bieten. Hier findet ihr unter anderem das Empire State Building, das Museum of Modern Art, das Rockefeller Center, die Grand Central Station, das UN-Hauptquartier oder den berühmten Madison Square Garden. Doch aufgepasst: Egal, ob ein paar Schuhe im Schaufenster auf der anderen Straßenseite euren Namen rufen oder ihr einen der vielen hier lebenden Prominenten seht – es ist gesetzlich verboten wild über die New Yorker Straßen zu laufen! In Amerika nennt man dies „Jay Walking“. „Jays“ nannten die New Yorker um 1900 die Touristen, die nach NYC kamen. Beeindruckt von den hohen Gebäuden sind diese stets wild auf die Straßen gelaufen, um zu sehen, wie hoch die vielen Wolkenkratzer sind, was wiederum zu einem regelrechten Verkehrschaos führte. Da die Hochhäuser über die Jahre nur immer höher und imposanter geworden sind, besteht die Gefahr auch heute noch. Also Augen auf beim Straßenkreuzen und am besten den ausgewiesenen Fußweg zu den Traumschuhen oder Leonardo DiCaprio nehmen.
Furthermore, Midtown’s architecture has plenty to offer. Here you’ll find the famous Empire State Building, the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, the Headquarters of the United Nations, and the renowned Madison Square Garden. But careful, no matter if it’s a pair of shoes that is screaming your name from the other side of the street or that you just spotted one of the many celebrities that live in New York – it is forbidden by law to simply walk across the streets! In America, they call it “jay walking”. Around the 1900s, “Jays” was the term that New Yorkers used to describe tourists coming to the city. Impressed by the many skyscrapers these “Jays” often used to simply walk across the streets to see how tall the buildings were causing a massive traffic chaos. Today these skyscrapers are even taller and more impressive – therefore, “jay walking” stays forbidden. So, you better watch out for the nearest pedestrian lights or crosswalks if you want to get to those shoes or take a selfie with Leonardo DiCaprio.
